As a logistics and shipping company serving the global economy, DHL Express has been taking active steps to reduce its carbon footprint in its buildings and fleets. DHL Express leases about 65,000 square feet of space at the Atlanta airport from Worldwide Flight Services. To support their environmentally friendly initiative, DHL planned to add a solar array to the roof, further contributing to the airport’s efforts to operate more sustainably.

With a facility that includes lithium-ion powered forklifts and a BAS HVAC system, the goal was to provide all needed energy through a PV solar system, resulting in a LEED-certified building. BA Solar Solutions, in collaboration with general contractor ARCO Murray, was charged with this task, which required clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Once the permits were approved, BA Solar installed a roof-mounted PV solar system with 1,440 modules, 8 inverters, and a data monitoring system, estimated to produce 28,472,822 kWh over its 30-year life span.
